We invite professionals from across the world, whose work inspires us, to host talks at our school to the public and student members every Thursday throughout the academic year. This allows us to experience a different perspective on the various aspects of architecture, which we wouldn’t normally share in the studio environment. It also enables first year to final year students to have an opportunity to engage with and question practising professionals.

Due to Covid restrictions booking is essential to come to lectures. This can be done on Eventbrite and a link will be posted for each lecture a few days in advance. You will need to book each week for every lecture you wish to attend. For members joining us virtually, a link will be sent out prior to the lecture.

Due to the unfortunate events that have unfolded during the last few months, a lot of thought and development has gone on to understand how we can take the society forward. The new committee has made the decision to provide the lectures online. By streaming the guest's lectures we can give access to all members remotely while making each person's safety our priority. Keep an eye on the website and our social media platforms for this year's lineup!

We are sorry to announce that 57'10 lecture events are cancelled until further notice. In light of the current situation and the university's decision to suspend all face-to-face teaching, we think it would be irresponsible to continue with our schedule at this time. This means our Heather Dubbeldam lecture, scheduled for this Thursday, is cancelled.
We do hope that it will be possible to return to our line-up towards the end of the semester and will be keeping everyone updated on our social media accounts. Wishing everyone the best! Stay safe and look after one another!

GIANNI BOTSFORD
Gianni Botsford Architects
This Thursday we are joined by Gianni Botsford of Gianni Botsford Architects.
As a successful London practice, Gianni Botsford Architects produce projects that make it clear they have a client first approach, making sure that their needs are met. Remaining a small practice, GBA like to keep their projects original and humane while providing the promise that they can design and supervise projects all over the world.
Gianni Botsford is Director and Head of Design at GBA receiving numerous awards over his career. His designs and the practice are heavily influenced by his research work into the optimisation of the control of natural light done during his time at the AA. With an active hand in education, Gianni has taught at the AA, London Metropolitan University and the Welsh School of Architecture while being a regular visiting critic at universities such as the Bartlett, Cambridge and Bath University.
CHRISTOPHER ROMER-LEE
Studio Octopi
This week we are joined by Christopher Romer-Lee of Studio Octopi. Studio Octopi are a successful practice known for their inventive designs that are an appropriate response to their context. Working across a multitude of sectors, Studio Octopi believe in architecture that focuses on people and place. Some of their recent projects include the Delfina Foundation refurbishment and new proposals for a naturally filtered, floating swimming pool known as Thames Baths for central London.
Chris Romer-Lee has been a key influence in the practice's work of developing ideas for projects such as the Thames Baths and since 2013 Chris has spoken at events such as TEDx KPMG, V&A for London Design Festival and Centre for London 2015 Conference. Chris is also involved in architectural education, teaching at the London School of Architecture and acting as a guest critic across the country.
DINGLE PRICE & ALEX GORE
Pricegore
We are lucky this week to be joined by two guests, Dingle Price and Alex Gore, directors of London practice Pricegore.
Pricegore is a practice that takes interest in the everyday pleasure of buildings and how they sit within the broader context. With offices in London and Bath, their designs are heavily research based, producing unique architecture. The practice works on a multitude of scales from furniture design to urban strategies, with both Dingle and Alex fulfilling roles as a Design Advisors to the London boroughs of Harrow and Hounslow.
Dingle and Alex are both involved in education alongside their practice. Dingle Price is a design studio leader at Kingston School of Art while also acting as a practice mentor at the Royal College of Art. Alex, while running a design studio with Dingle, is also currently 3rd year coordinator at Kingston School of Art.
PATRIK SCHUMACHER
Zaha Hadid Architects
We are very excited to announce that our first guest this semester in the well-known architect Patrik Schumacher.
Patrik Schumacher is principal of Zaha Hadid Architects and is leading the firm since Zaha Hadid’s passing in March 2016. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988 and was seminal in developing Zaha Hadid Architects to become a 400 strong global architecture and design brand.
Patrik Schumacher is a winner of the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture and an academician of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
In 1996 he founded the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association in London where he continues to teach. Patrik Schumacher holds a PhD in Cultural Science and has published over 100 articles to architectural journals and anthologies, as well as a two-volume treatise on architecture.

PETER MURRAY
Architectural Writer
We are excited to announce that Peter Murray will be joining us this week!
Peter is Curator in Chief of New London Architecture (NLA) and Mayor of London's International Design Advocate. He trained at the now defunct Bristol University Department of Architecture and at the Architectural Association but has spent his career commenting on architecture rather than practising it.
He started at Architectural Design, followed by a stint as editor of the RIBA Journal. He founded Blueprint magazine and started Wordsearch, a global design and communications agency for architects and real estate before setting up the London Festival of Architecture in 2004 and NLA in 2005. He has curated many exhibitions including 'New Architecture, the work of Foster, Rogers Stirling' and ' Living Bridges' at the Royal Academy. He has written or edited a number of books including The Saga of Sydney Opera House and The Great Estates.
He is a keen cyclist and campaigns for better cycling infrastructure in cities. He is listed by the Evening Standard as one of the 1000 most influential Londoners.

Fala Atelier
We are thrilled that Ahmed Belkhodja from Fala Atelier will be joining us this week!
Ahmed is a founding partner at Fala Atelier and embodies the practice's ethos of joy and lightness. Fala Atelier is a small and naive architecture practice based in Porto, Portugal, taking a hedonistic and restrained approach to architecture. They lecture at universities all over the world and their work has been exhibited and published on a multitude of international platforms.
VICTOR ENRICH
Architectural Photographer
We are delighted to have Victor Enrich joining us this week.
Victor Enrich is a photographer who specialises in architectural photography. Victor chooses to work with older photography techniques and is internationally recognised. His most notable works include City Portraits and NHDK.
Victor offers a unique perspective on architecture as a commentator instead of a designer and his work has been regularly discussed in the world of architecture in the likes of Dezeen, ArchDaily and many other notable publications.
JAMES WHITAKER
Whitaker Studio
James Whitaker of Whitaker Studio will be joining us this week.
Whitaker Studio is well known for its unique approach to design, with a constantly evolving palette of interests and themes. While now predominantly working with architecture, Whitaker Studio work hard to create the best work possible with everyone they work with.
James has worked beyond just architecture, working with photography, digital artistry and film making. Having an electric viewpoint and varied approach to his work, James has delivered projects such as the Joshua Tree Residence and the Anywhere House.

Plan Delivery
This week Graham Robertson, Director of Plan Delivery will be joining us. This is our first talk by an engineer and will offer some great insights into the architectural professions connection to others within the construction industry.
Plan Delivery is a construction planning consultancy that specialises in helping clients with everyday practical planning controls. They participate in a multitude of projects across Scotland and the UK including the University of Glasgow's expansion, the new Queensferry crossing and the Scottish Parliament.
Graham has an insight into how architects and designers can better work to increase planning efficiency to deliver a project effectively and on time. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from a different perspective within our industry!

Witherford Watson Mann
Stephen Witherford, director of Witherford Watson Mann is our guest this week.
Witherford Watson Mann are a London based practice, established almost 20 years ago, specialising in a wide variety of projects, from conservation design to urban planning. Believing in a constant stream of dialogue and the ability to adapt design, WWM works to create an individual answer for every client.
As winners of the 2013 Stirling Prize for their work at Astley Castle in combining the past and present, they were also shortlisted for the award this year for their work at Nevill Holt Opera. Stephen Witherford has led a number of successful projects over the last 20 years such as Amnesty International UK, Bankside Urban Forest, the Olympic Legacy Masterplan and the 21st century Almshouse.
MARTIN LESJAK
INNOCAD
Martin Lesjak, CEO and Founding Partner of INNOCAD will be joining us this week.
INNOCAD Architecture is an Austrian based practice that offers both architecture and interiors services across a wide range of specialities. Choosing to work out of context and often going against conventionality, INNOCAD was founded by Peter Schwaiger and Martin Lesjak, who was named Contract magazine's Designer of the Year in 2015.
Martin, as founder of INNOCAD, is dedicated to the design process and in turn has received many awards. As an educator, he regularly lectures at the Technical University of Graz and has spoken at numerous architectural exhibitions in cities such as Bucharest, Vienna and Istanbul. His creativity has also led him to co-found 13&9 Design, a product design label that produces a wide variety of products and designs for a multitude of international brands.

For World Mental Health Day we have Ben Channon joining us on the big screen to discuss mental health and architecture. It's is so important to raise awareness of this issue so please come along!
As a Senior Architect and Mental Wellbeing Ambassador at Assael, Ben is a champion of increasing awareness of mental health within the profession.
n 2017 he was part of founding the Architects' Mental Wellbeing Forum, a collection of 12 practices in London working together to better mental wellbeing for architectural professionals. His interest in the subject has taken him so far as to publish Happy by Design, a book written to give guidance on how to design for better wellbeing.

Karen is the chair of the board of directors at Page\Park and a board member for both Women in Property Scotland and Employee Ownership Scotland.
During her time at Page\Park, Karen has completed many notable projects such as the redevelopment of Kelvin Hall in Glasgow while holding a wealth of knowledge in the areas of higher education and healthcare design. She has also designed projects such as the Woodside Health Centre and the Hawkhead Centre for the Scottish War Blind.

BRIAN MACKAY-LYONS
MACKAY-LYONS SWEETAPPLE ARCHITECTS
We are delighted to welcome Brian MacKay-Lyons, founding director of Canadian-based practice MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects.
Brian established his own practice in 1985, before partnering with Talbot Sweetapple in 2005. The practice has built an international reputation for design excellence confirmed by over 125 awards. Most notably the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal in 2015. The work of the practice has also been recognised in over 330 publications including six monographs. Whilst the body of work of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects is known for its cultural responsiveness to local landscapes, climate and material culture, it also consistently possesses an archetypal quality which touches a global audience.
As well as running a successful practice, Brian has been a professor at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia for over thirty years and has held chairs at numerous universities throughout the world. In addition to all of this, Brian was the founder of the highly publicised and widely acclaimed “Ghost” workshops. These were designed to promote the transfer of architectural knowledge through direct experience - project-based learning taught in the master builder tradition. Attendees and tutors of these workshops have included, Kenneth Frampton, Glenn Murcutt and Rick Joy.

57°10 welcome Ann Nisbet to the Scott Sutherland School, this Thursday, for the penultimate talk in this semester’s series.
Ann Nisbet Studio is a Scottish Architecture and Design Studio specialising in Rural Architecture and Master Planning, Residential Projects, Community Engagement Projects and Installations.
Prior to establishing the practice, Ann was a Principle at Dualchas Architects, gaining over 13 years experience of working on rural and urban Architecture projects.
Formally establishing Ann Nisbet Studio in late 2013, The studio’s first major project, Newhouse of Auchengree, won several awards. These included the GIA Supreme Architecture Award, a Scottish Award for Quality in Planning, RIAS Award and a RIBA National Award. The project was also shortlisted for RIBA House of the Year.
In 2017, Ann was also a finalist for ‘RIAS Emerging Architect of the Year’ and nominated as one of ‘five to watch in 2018′ by the Architects’ Journal.

We will be joined by Ulrich Königs, Founding Director of Königs Architekten, for the next talk in this semester’s series.
Ulrich co-founded Königs Architekten in 1996 with Ilse Königs in Cologne, Germany.
The work of the practice is primarily focussed around public and cultural buildings and has been acknowledged through numerous awards and accolades. They have also won many projects through competition, including Church by the Sea, Schilling, completed in 2012.
Ulrich began his studies at RWTH Aachen University, Germany in 1991. He completed his Diploma at the Architectural Association, London, in 1995 before establishing his own practice the following year.
Ulrich is also a Professor of Constructing and Designing at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, a role he started in 2002.
PETER ST JOHN
CARUSO ST JOHN ARCHITECTS
This Tuesday evening 57°10 welcome Peter St John, of Caruso St John Architects, for the next talk in this semester’s series.
Since its foundation in 1990, Caruso St John has been pursuing an architecture that is rooted in place. The practice is consciously international in its outlook, with approximately 25 people working from an open studio in a 1930s factory in east London that the practice converted for their use. In 2010, they opened a second office in Zurich.
The work of the practice has been acknowledged internationally through numerous awards and accolades. Their Newport Street Gallery won numerous awards in 2016, including the RIBA Stirling Prize. The project was also nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2017.
Peter St John began his architectural studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, completing them at the Architectural Association in 1984. He worked for Richard Rogers, Florian Beigel, Dixon Jones, and Arup Associates prior to establishing his own practice with Adam Caruso.

JAMIE FOBERT ARCHITECTS
57°10 welcome Jamie Fobert, Director of Jamie Fobert Architects, to the Scott Sutherland School this Wednesday evening at 5pm.
Since its inception in 1996, Jamie Fobert Architects has established a reputation for innovative and inspiring architectural design. Over two decades, the practice has grown to be an outstanding team of eighteen, based in Shoreditch, London.
Their diverse portfolio of work has been acknowledged with numerous awards and accolades. Most recently, their project Tate St Ives was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2018.
Jamie studied architecture in his native Canada at the University of Toronto. He arrived in London in 1988 and worked for eight years at David Chipperfield Architects, overseeing the set-up of a new Berlin office. As Director of Jamie Fobert Architects, Jamie invests personally and contributes his design expertise into every project. He also lectures and teaches widely and has a deep involvement in the arts, including being a Trustee of the Camden Arts Centre.

BENNETTS ASSOCIATES
This Thursday we welcome Rab Bennetts, Founding Director of Bennetts Associates, back to the Scott Sutherland School for the next talk in this semester’s series.
Rab co-founded Bennetts Associates with his partner Denise Bennetts in 1987. The practice has since won over 150 awards, including shortlisting for the RIBA Stirling Prize three times and 26 RIBA Awards.
With offices in London, Edinburgh and Manchester, Bennetts Associates strive to create truly enduring architecture that is more than skin deep. They believe this is achieved through their pioneering expertise in sustainability, genuine approach to functionality and beautifully crafted construction.
Rab provides overall design direction to the firm. He takes a personal, hands-on approach to projects and fosters a collaborative spirit throughout the practice’s activities. Rab was also awarded the OBE for services to architecture in 2003.
DAVID HENDERSON
GLENN HOWELLS ARCHITECTS
This Thursday we will be joined by David Henderson, Studio Director at Glenn Howells Architects, for the next lecture in this semester’s series.
With offices in Birmingham and London, GHA has grown into a studio with national and international reach. Many of their designs have been awarded prizes, including being shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize and winning the British Council for Offices’ top award.
David joined GHA’s London office in 2012, leading the successful competition submission and overseeing the design of the new John Lewis department store and a residential block within Land Securities’ Oxford Westgate development.
David has also been a visiting critic and lecturer here at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, as well as IIT, Chicago, and the Bartlett, London.
PAUL STALLAN
STALLAN-BRAND
Paul Stallan, Design Director of Stallan-Brand will kick off this semester’s lecture series this Thursday at 5pm.
The Glasgow-based practice was established in 2012 by a team which evolved over the last 25 years and includes architects, master-planners, graphic designers and model makers.
The studio champions transformational design informed by dialogue and creative exchange. Through their understanding of place, research-based design and deep rooted appreciation of their role as architect, Stallan-Brand strive to develop simple, resilient designs which support social progression.
Their recent project Broomlands Primary School was acknowledged for a number of awards including the AJ Architecture Awards School Project of the Year 2018.

We will be joined by Søren Nielsen of Danish practice, Vandkunsten Architects, for the final talk of Semester 1. The lecture will take place this Thursday at the earlier time of 1pm.
Founded in 1970, Vandkunsten continue to pride themselves on their sensitive attitude to design which is wholly focused around people. The practice aim to design buildings around the ways people live, work, play, and think. Their architecture rarely draws attention to itself but seeks to engage in a dialogue with the people and communities that use it.
Vandkunsten’s almost five-decade-long effort has been acknowledged with numerous awards and accolades from Denmark and abroad. They have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award on 5 occasions.

Nick Hayhurst, Founding Director of Hayhurst and Co Architects, will join us on Thursday at 5 for the next talk in this semester’s series.
Hayhurst and Co. is an award-winning London-based architectural studio established in 2004 by Nick Hayhurst and Jonathan Nicholls. Through their diverse portfolio, they have established a reputation for designing environments that are sensitive and sustainable, innovative and humane, and refined and delightful.
The practice’s work has been widely published nationally and internationally. They were runners up in Young Architect of the Year 2012 and their completed projects have won RIBA Awards in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. In 2016, Hayhurst and Co’s, Garden House, was also shortlisted for the RIBA House of the Year and was featured on Grand Designs: RIBA House of the Year.
Nick has taught and lectured widely and is a Senior Lecturer at University of Brighton where he specialises in design theory and practice. Nick is also a Professional Examiner at the Cass and the Bartlett and an External Examiner here at the Scott Sutherland School.

MOLE ARCHITECTS
Ian Bramwell, Director at Mole Architects, will join us on Thursday evening for the next lecture of the series.
Mole Architects are an award-winning practice based in Cambridge, founded by Meredith Bowles in 1997. Their projects cover a broad range of architectural fields, ranging from studios for artists to masterplans for developers.
The practice desire to create buildings which are surprising yet seamlessly integrated in their context. Each project is informed by the nature of the place and the specifics of the brief. Mole’s commitment to ‘green building’ has also been a constant throughout the life of the practice.
The practice have won a number of regional and national awards, including RIBA Annual Awards Stephen Lawrence Prize for their project, Houseboat, in 2017.

REIACH AND HALL ARCHITECTS
After a week of exciting announcements for Reiach and Hall, we are delighted to be joined by Neil Gillespie this Thursday for the next talk of the series.
Neil is the Design Director at Reiach & Hall Architects and a visiting professor here at the Scott Sutherland School, running Maters Unit 3.
The Edinburgh based practice have received a number of national awards for their portfolio of work, including a remarkable list of RIAS & RIBA awards. Their project Nucleus, The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive, won the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award 2018 last week and was also nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019.

FEILDEN FOWLES
Fergus Feilden, of London-based Feilden Fowles, will join us on Monday for the first lecture back after our study trips.
Established in 2009 by Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles, Feilden Fowles have continued their evolution into a leading practice across many architectural fields, including Arts & Culture, Education and Workplace design, and were named BD’s ‘Young Architect of the Year’ in 2016.
The collaborative studio aim to encapsulate the essence of site and place from their early concept designs. They are primarily interested in the social impact of their architecture and the way in which it improves the surrounding community and enhances the lives of the people within it. The practice also have a passion for construction. They experiment with physical modelling to thoroughly test various aspects of their ideas. This passion is translated into an overarching desire to express the hand made constriction processes within their finished architecture.

RICHARD MURPHY
RICHARD MURPHY ARCHITECTS
Richard Murphy will be returning to the Scott Sutherland School this Thursday, for the next lecture in this semester’s talk series.
Richard founded Edinburgh based practice, Richard Murphy Architects in 1991. The practice define their goal as to make architecture equally of its place and of its time which responds carefully to its context. The studio have completed a number of projects across the UK and Ireland, Europe and Sri Lanka. Richard has also recently published Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited, a further study of the renowned building, for which he has received recognition internationally.

Mels Crouwel, Founding Partner of Dutch practice Benthem Crouwel Architects, will join us on Thursday evening for the next lecture of the series.
With offices in Amsterdam and Dusseldorf, the practice have received a number of awards for their large portfolio of projects. As they approach their 30th year in practice, Benthem Crouwel continue to devote their efforts towards creating innovative, flexible and efficient designs which contribute to the function of the city.

We will be joined by Nathan Coley this Thursday evening for the second lecture of the semester.
Nathan Coley is a contemporary Scottish artist based in Glasgow. His work is primarily concerned with the way in which architecture reflects and conditions the social environment. Coley was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2007 and his recent individual and collaborative work has been exhibited across the UK and Europe.

MORRIS+COMPANY
Joe Morris of Morris+Company will open this semester’s lecture series this Thursday at 5pm.
Morris+Company are a London based practice whose admirable ethos of design is focused heavily around hand drawing, model making as well as more contemporary visual techniques. The practice were recently awarded both RIBA Regional and National Awards for their project R7, King’s Cross.

AN EDUCATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
The step from institutional learning into the ‘real-world’ of work can often be a very different experience from the expectations of many graduates. It is true that this can be said for many courses at a college or university, however this difference is often amplified for courses such as architecture with students devoting a considerable number of years of their life to study. In a world where technology is ever-evolving and attitudes are changing, there is much speculation over how education must develop to meet the needs of today’s and future generations. There is always dramatic speculation and hype surrounding the future but what is the prognosis in reality for architectural education?
57°10 Architecture Society and the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment have assembled a diverse panel of high-profile guest practitioners, educators and alumni to discuss their experience of architectural education across the decades hand in hand with their knowledge in the shifting world of practice. The panel includes Jude Barber, director at Collective Architecture, director of Nicoll Russell Studio, Willie Watt PPRIAS, Professor Graeme Hutton, MArch course leader at University of Dundee, Professor Lynne Sullivan OBE partner at SustainableBYdesign and Emma Gibb, Associate Partner at Foster + Partners in London.
This is a free early afternoon event and it will taking place on 14th September 2018 starting at 14:00. The discussion will be held at Robert Gordon University in the Sir Ian Wood Building in room N117 and all are welcome to attend and participate in the conversation.
